Default Gas hand works in reverse... Help....

been driving my truck a lot more recently and the gas hand that i thought didn't move off of the E actually does. when you put gas in the hand moves down below the E and when it runs out of gas the hand is on the E I dont know what to check to fix this problem anyone have any ideas? also all the other gauges work correctly. here are 2 pics one with gas in the tank the other is almost empty.

Something wrong with the sender. Broken wire or saturated float.

Not sure why but this site shows senders for '80-'84 then the 85+ are all for EFI engines... However the only engine with EFI in '85-'86 was the 5.0 V8. Then everything went EFI in '87.
You might contact them and ask about the '85 senders without the EFI (Fuel return port).

Is it a side or rear tank? here is LMC link for side tank http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/FD/full.aspx?Page=56 and the rear are on the next pages. My truck has the 19 gal non pump side tank (# 9)
