An identical used engine is the cheapest & easiest. But it's probably not worth the effort; especially in such an old truck. What exactly is wrong with the current engine? Do you have some attachment to the truck that prevents you from spending money on something newer/better? Any money you put into this one will probably be wasted since the truck will probably never be worth the cost of a rebuilt engine alone - forget about the labor to install it; even AFTER the reman is in & working.

I say big bkock swap. 80s trucks are the best. Id rather drive my 86 f250 then my 04 f250. But i cant afford the gas to daily drive it. But a 302 is probably the simplest swap if it was a v8 truck. They are everywhere and tons of parts for them, But really its not hard to swap engines in these trucks at all. I can ussaly pull a engine in about an hour or so in an 80 to 86.
