Default Distributor

So I had to change my distributor magnetic pick up yesterday. In the process the lock pin that goes on the shaft to lock n the gear looking thing became too skinny. It no longer would keep the gear rotating with the shaft. So I found the appropriate drill bit and made a pin. Question is, will it last or should I just buy a new distributor. It works great now

The gear should be pressed onto the distributor shaft; the pin is just to keep it from sliding, but it's NOT strong enough to hold a loose gear on.

How did the original pin "become skinny"?
