Carter YFA
Hello All,
Newbie to a lot of things here (Carbureted motor, ford truck). I just bought an 85 F-150 with an inline 6. I put a stock intake and carter YFA in the truck, but i'm not sure where everything connects up on it. Finding info on the web is a little difficult. Any
you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

there are a lot of different configurations from what i understand especially depending on if anything has been changed over the years... however right next to where the hood latch is there should be a diagram that shows exactly how it is supposed to be connected. i no longer have all the definitions for what all the shorthand means but it can be easily googled. some of the biggies i think is make sure you have vacuum set up to your break lines and to your distributer unless you have a computer in it and there is usually an blow back that lets the carb vent excess gas back into the tanks. beyond that you may have a sphere off to the passenger side which needs to be connected (its a vacuum reservior for things like fan control in the cab i believe) there could also be a vent from the back of the valve cover that gets sucked into the carb and vacuum should be set to the temp sensor on the air filter cover and then to a diverter that pulls air up from along side the exhaust (helps heat it up quicker on cold mornings) and you may have a diverter built into your exhaust/manifold that actually pulls exhaust air up into the temp sensor on the choke...
so there could be lots going on but it depends a lot on the exact set up that you have which should all be shown on that diagram... i will warn you that many people when they first got these trucks yanked most of that stuff out thinking it was all for emissions control which it does help but it also helps the vehicle start up and run well with that particular carb. if you are missing enough parts it may well be a good idea to just do a duraspark 2 conversion on your rig.

I second the ds2 swap. Im trying to scrounge up the pieces to do my 86. The way the system screws up is it locks the dizzy from advancing. Your base timing of 10* is where it stays. Sucks alot more gas.
After the swap friends have noted up to 18~22 mpg. Mine is locked at 10* and im getting about 13mpg.

if your not getting a proper timing advance it's because the computer is in a limp mode, not all the 80-86 f150's have a working check engine light but if your not advancing the timing while running then something the computer wants it isn't getting which is most likely the oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold or you either have a malfunctioning carb or an after market carb in it which doesnt respond when the computer wants to adjust the mixture in the standard electric carb. the carter yfa has a mixture adjust solenoid on it that allows the computer to richen or lean the mixture according to what the oxygen sensor is telling it (one of the most commonly broken systems on these trucks that affects mpg after the motor warms up) so if the computer isnt getting a signal from an oxygen sensor or it's not getting any response from the carb when it tries to lean/richen the fuel it wont advance the timing and you will get crap for mpg
