Automatic conversion
I have a 1977 f150 in Round Rock, TX near Austin. It belonged to my grandfather and I have been trying to restore it for 3 years, but after moving here from Tampa I don't have anyone anymore to teach me to work on it or restore it. I am first looking to convert my truck from manual to automatic. Does anyone have any suggestions for anyone that can help me?
It depends on what engine you have first of all. If it's a windsor style, i.e. 300/6 302 351 then you can go with a c4, c6, aod, or aod-e/e40d if you want to get a transmission computer to run it. The c4,c6,aod are all full hydraulic, no computer involved. Just make sure you get a tv cable for it (Lokar). Get a flywheel that will work with your engine and the trans you choose. Making a floor shifter shouldn't be too difficult, or swap out your column for a auto column. If it's a 351cleveland/351m/400m or a 390 by chance, it might be a little more difficult. I'm sure a salvage yard can clue you in on what's compatible. Good luck.
(I'm looking into swapping an AOD into my 1968 F-250 myself right now)
