I have a 79 f150 short bed super cab. 400m with a fmx and I am wanting to convert it to a aod. I know my motor has the same bellhousing as the 429/460 but I am not sure what year would be best or even what years ford did put a aod behind them. Any ideas? I will post a better pic later.

No AOD's had a 385 series bell housing bolt pattern that I know of...I think there are adapters to mate the two but you might consider an E4OD from a 460 truck as the adapter kits are pricey. You could grab an E4OD AND rebuild it for less than an adapter kit I believe. You may even be able to score the 460 as well!

Another route could be to locate a small block or i6 with an AOD and new gears if you're really going for fuel efficiency.

Very cool classic Xcab by the way! I dig the older ones myself...always wanted to restore one and make it nice with a few bells and whistles including a late model drivetrain.
