Trying to put a new key ignition in my son’s 1986 Lariat. Gone through five different brands and all hand up or wedge about a 1/4 inch from the column. The old one slides in perfectly but will not turn back to the lock position & the key won’t come out.
It looks as it the female component for the ignition in the column is turned but I do not know how to turn it back. Sorry I can’t explain better than that.

Fiddle with it
It has to be in the on position to push the retainer pin in
You might need something like this to turn the gear inside and behind the key and cylinder

 

You can take your old key and cylinder apart and use the barrel part
That will turn the little gear for you, like the above tool
