Default 86 5.0 no start issues

I’ve had multiple problems with my f150, it was that when it gets hot that it don’t want to run but only when it’s hot outside, not during colder months, I can’t figure that part out. New problem is it wont start now, it cut off on me goin 55 and I was lucky to drift it to a parking lot, it’s done this before but never to the point where it wont turn back on, I had to have it towed this time. Regardless I’ve changed the distributor, cap, rotor, wires, spark plugs, coil, module on distributor, solenoid and yes it’s getting fuel. Weird thing it’s doing is I have to turn the distributor to get the fuel pump and one of the relays to kick on, I can’t figure that part out. I wiggle wires and everything and it don’t kick on, I have to turn the distributor for it to work. Between the running like crap when it’s hot and the truck gets warmed up and this new issues I’m at a loss and don’t know what to do at this point. Any fresh ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Check your processor for leaking capacitors
Pull it out and take it apart
Big problems with engine miss et al. when those caps leak and fail

Thank you very much, I actually just did that today and I do have a cap leaking, wasn’t sure if this was what’s causing the problem or not. I’ve been trying to find a replacement ecm or rock auto but I’m not finding mine exactly. Mines a E6TF-12A650-AB1A and the closest I can find is one that ends in just ABA. Would this be the same one? It says it’s for the same truck (rwd automatic) but I’m being told get the exact same one. I can find the exact same one on eBay but it’s way more expensive, used and I can’t be sure that it’s in working order.

I would change all three capacitors myself. It is very easy to do.

i reckon that would be cheaper… glad you said that tho, I was milling over that idea but didn’t consider that there was more than one cap to do honestly… as much money as I’ve put into it lately it wouldn’t hurt to try that first. Im goin to look into that now

I appreciate the suggestion but unfortunately that route is above my pay grade, I can solder and what-not but getting the thing apart is not happening without me breaking it… sooooo…. Original question, can I use the ecm that ends in ABA when mine ends in AB1A?

Ok so I got a new ecm from rockauto and I’m getting spark now. But I can’t figure out what exactly is happening still. With the key on my fuel pump relay isn’t kicking on, but if I turn the distributor counter clockwise it kicks on the relay and fuel pump, pretty sure this isn’t position it should be set. I turn it back clockwise and the relay no longer has power… I don’t believe this is supposed to be happening…Regardless when I have it turned to where the relay/fuel pump kicks on I try turning it on and it still don’t start. Not surprised by this considering I know where it was set before. Has anyone ever seen this happen before?

I had a similar issue with my 86 302 EFI. Finally decided to really inspect the engine wiring harness. Found multiple issues with exposed wires going to ignition module connector, throttle position sensor connector and temp sensor connector. Literally, one of the ignition module connector wires was hanging on by one copper strand causing it to fall in and out of place. Replaced all three connectors and repaired some other exposed wiring and issue was resolved. Hope this helps, if issue not already corrected.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm still dealing with the issue unfortunately. I read the post you had/have up and my issues are almost completely the same as you had, except mine will just die occasionally while driving and usually start back up before i have to come to a stop until this last time that it refused to start at all. However I'm going to go check your suggestion now. I've just ordered a new coolant temp sensor that was suggested which i don't think will fix it, but after reading Your post i have a little bit of hope for it now. Thanks again
