Default 82 F150 Speedometer Gear Problem

Hi all, First of all i have an 82 f150 4x4 and the problem is my speedometer has stopped working due to the fact that my transfer case chewed up the speedometer gear. Now I have replaced the gear but it dose not move at the speedometer. So I put a drill on the cable at the end of the cable and it spun up to 45mph like it should have so I put the gear back on and nothing. I have felt around in the t-case and the gear that drives the speedometer gear is still there. so basicly im wondering what else I can do with out takein gthe T-case out and doing a tear down.

You only have to pull off the extension housing to get to the speedometer gear. Pull it and inspect the gear. It may have worn smooth and won't drive the driven gear anymore, or I have seen the gear split and it will just spin on the shaft instead of spinning the driven gear. You have to pull a snap ring to slide the gear off, and there is a little ball bearing that fits into a hole on the tailshaft and fits into a groove in the inner surface of the gear that keeps it from spinning on the shaft. Don't lose that bearing.

You do not have to remove the extension housing, You will need to remove the drive line flange and the seal. After this you reach in through the speedometer cable hole and push the gear out through the spot where the seal was. These are also plastic gears so it will probably be chewed up and you will need to get the proper colored or number of teeth to replace it. The color indicates the number of teeth. I did this on my 81 and 83 so it should work on a 82.
