1985 f150
ive got a 85 f150 5.8 2wd and well the ignition cylinder broke i replaced it and lost all the electrical no lights no nothing the fuses are good the battery is brand new the cables are good i thought it might be the ignition switch but could that cause me to loose all of the electrical if anyone has any ideas on what it could be id really appreciate it
i got the cylinder from autozone it was a direct factory replacement i didnt pull anywires out all i did was unhook the battery pop out the old cylinder and replace i then i hooked that battery back up
The ignition switch is located on the top of the steering column about knee level. The switch is operated by a rod that runs down the top (outside) of the column down to the switch. There is a large connector on the switch. Check that the connector is still attached properly.
What was wrong with your cylinder?
Normally what breaks is the linkage that connects the cylinder to the rod. It's made from cheap 'pot' metal. Mine has broken 2X. Both times I was able to get new parts for about $15 from the dealer but it's been a few years.
Remove the lower plastic dash part and the plastic cover from around the column. Find the rod on top of the column and see if it moves when turning the key. If not the linkage is broken or possibly not assembled correctly. If broken you will be able to move the rod by hand or vise-grips and start the engine without turning the key... BTDT for weeks, (when nobody was looking), until I could fix it.
If the linkage parts are broken then you will have to pull the wheel and disassemble the upper column.

FIXED well i feel very stupid but it was the battery i never checked it because it was brand new so i got it tested it didnt show a thing i got another one and she fired right up
