Angry 1977 shift problems

I have a 1977 F150 2wd automatic without tilt steering wheel. Today it was hard to shift. After a couple of stops something broke in the column. The shifter in the cab moves freely and will not move the linkage under the hood. I can shift the transmission if I pop the hood and move the linkage where it connects to the column, but it doesn't move the shifter in the cab. The linkage is still connected. Any idea on what broke? Where can I find an exploded view of the column? The dealer only supports back to 1984.
