1977 ford
Hey guys i bought a 1977 ford about a year ago and it has spent most of its last year in the shop. The Engine had allot of problems..the previous owner had put caulk inside of the engine but we just had a rebuilt engine put back into my truck that was suppose to be the same as the previous motor. the problem is i have no clue what it is. i decoded the Vin number and it said something about a 8 cylinder 400 cubic inch motor. i swapped the old intake and carburetor with an Edelbrock 4bl. The problem is that my truck is a daily driver and when i put the new engine in for the first time in probably 6 years the rest of the truck had to deal with the true power and not a limping engine. So now my transmission is going out and i believe that i have a C6 in it. it has to be rebuilt in it and i want something that is good for 4wheeling and towing yet still good for 3 hour drives back and forth to college. Does any body have any suggestions i would really appreciate it.
I was told that it was a 351 but i don't know if it is a M or W. someone told me that it was a Windsor but i have no clue and i heard that the c6 was real strong but i am sure that it is out. it is hardly still moving.
Chetah is correct on the trans. Here is how to tell the difference between a 351W or a 351M. Look for the t-stat. If its in the intake manifold its a 351W but if its in the block where the timing gears are its a 351M/400 family. Look closely and you will see. The difference between a 351M and 400M is the stroke of the engine.
