1977 clutch issue
Okay. I have a 77 L6 with a four speed manual. My problem is that it's hard to shift, the pedal has a lot of travel. I don't feel clutch pressure until the bottom of the stroke. The pedal pushs back when under acceleration. I see the adjuster rod underneath but I don't see how I will gain more lever action. I feel like I'm missing a step. The clutch is not worn out because it lets out closer to the floor and it doesn't slip.

I also was confused about it the first time I had to adjust it but that's really all there is, that rod (called "clutch release rod") does it all. As long as you're looking at the correct rod. It should be a long threaded rod with two nuts on it. Gotta break those nuts apart from each other and then adjust. I can't remember which way you'd need to go though.
Adjust it one way and if that's wrong, go the other way.
There are specific measurements for pedal travel. You'll measure from the pedal to the bottom of the steering wheel. You start by measuring the distance to the pedal as it rests at the top. Then you'll push the pedal until it starts to give resistance and measure again. Your goal is 1.25" but according to the shop manuals is acceptable between .5" and 2". One full turn of the nut is equivalent to about .25".
NOTE: These measurements are a bit outdated for your truck, I'm looking at my 1979 shop manuals (applies to all manual transmissions of that year). I'd be willing to bet it doesn't change much, but you may want to try to find a specific measurement for your year.

Thanks. I took a better look in my garage and found the bushings are worn on one side, the floor flexes and the end of the adjuster rod is flat. I'm going to build a new adjuster that has a link at one end. At some point ill put a rebuild but for now I just need to get through the winter plowing. Thanks again
