The 5.0 isa a great engine but not the best choice for towing, the torque curve is just too high. My '17 5.0 w/3.73 gears spent a lot of time in the lower transmission gears. Mileage was in the 6-8 mpg range.

Seriously, don't overthink this...just pull the damned trailer. One of my trailers has a 620 pound tongue weight and I don't even notice it. It literally makes no difference in how the truck sits.

My trailer is usually around 600. Should I be concerned? Will the bumper be dragging on the ground? Does anyone know why Ford has such a low max tongue weight?
Your truck is the same as mine and it isn’t rated at 13k, that’s for the 2x4 version only. I think 4x4 is a little less than 10k. Also, anytime you have close to 500lbs of tongue weight or pulling 5k pounds you should have a WDH. Most usually run out of payload way before tongue weight. Main point with the WDH is to even out the backend weight that lifts up the front tires which can impair the ability to steer, especially when going over bumps at high speeds.

Rating is 12,900 for 4x4 with trailer tow package. I understand about WDH, just won't work for what I'm doing. Most of the time payload would not be a problem, but I can think of a few times I might go over. I suspect I'd be better off just going with a HD since I really don't like being near or over a vehicles limits.
