So, lately I've been having this message pop up on my infotainment screen, mostly first thing in the morning and mostly in cold temps. But sometimes after sitting for a few hours (starting for the second time for the day) and again mostly in cold temps. This is a new thing. The truck will be three years old (I ordered it and took delivery in April of 2022) and I've got 65,100 miles on it. Is this due to a new Sync software upgrade? Any other thoughts?
This is nothing new. It all started with the 2011 model year. It's a result of the BMS, battery management system. There are hundreds of posts on the forum about this. Thanks to BMS your battery is not fully charged and the battery will not last more then a few years at best.
What was stated above about the battery being weak and the BMS system is your issue. You can try charging the 12V battery with a charger overnight and maybe get a couple more months out of it. You might think “but the truck still starts” and that is the BMS also trying to save every bit of battery for the next start. For the non-powerboost, an H8 AGM battery should fit the tray and be a nice upgrade to the factory installed H6.
Like @JohnTrigger mentioned, you'd benefit from getting a bigger battery. Since these trucks are so power hungry with all the electronics, it would help to have more juice.
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
No Crank/No Start With A Battery Draw And A/C Clutch Engaged At All
Times
23-2130
08 May 2023
Model:
Ford
2021-2023 F-150
Issue: Some 2021-2023 F-150 vehicles may exhibit a no crank/no start with an excessive battery draw and air
conditioning (A/C) clutch engaged at all times. This may be due to an open diode in the A/C clutch damaging the
output driver field effect transistor (FET) in the body control module C (BCMC). To correct the condition, follow the
Service Procedure to replace the BCMC and A/C clutch disc and hub assembly.
Action: Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:
• 2021-2023 F-150
• Excessive battery draw
• A/C clutch engaged at all times
I had the same situation and insisted that Ford replace the battery which they did after 3 service trips but the problem returned. I went to another dealer who informed me of the TSB and the problem is no longer one.
This issue has not come back since I switched to a Kirkland h7 back in December.
Like 2 months ago? A new battery usually will be good for about a year before the problem comes back. And a lot has to do with how much you drive and how often. My 2011 went through 3 batteries in 4 years since I only had a 10 minute commute. After disconnecting the BMS I had the next new battery last 6 years when I traded it in. That speaks for itself.
