Default Sync 4 being replaced by Android Auto

Any updates on when the Sync 4 will be replaced by Android Auto? Ford stated in 2022 this would happen on the 2023 models but not seeing this yet.

I'm not sure what makes you think that CarPlay won't work on an Android OS. It is Apple that designs their software and products not to play nicely with other platforms. Android is open source and I am sure it will support Carplay. Even if it does not, because it is open source, any dev can make an app for it that will allow it to work. You'll most likely be able to gain root user privileges and be able to customize everything, install youtube or whatever apps you want on it, etc. The Android community of devs would salivate at the endless opportunities of apps and customizations they would be able to do for their own cars and put on the android market.

I think what @rugedraw stated is correct, but I think it's natural to find the language confusing, since Android as an architecture replacing Sync4, is NOT the same as Android Auto which is how you link an android phone to a vehicle. Ford can switch the current architecture which supports both android and iphone, to something else, that also supports both. It comes down to compatibility and paying any licensing fees required.

Agreed. I don't think a lot of Apple people know that Android is an OS and not a phone. My Sony TV runs on an Android architecture, and it works great. I would LOVE if my truck was Android powered.

I’m an Apple user, and I am aware that Android is an OS, not a phone.
many of us Apple users despise Android because of what it is, open source. Much more risk, only one of which is risk of things not playing nice with each other. As an Apple user I know that if it is approved by Apple it works, and works well. YMMV.

The head unit is more a central vehicle control unit. So much goes on behind the scenes we don't track. Integrating and refining the software to work with everything Ford is trying to do has to be a massive effort. I'd rather Ford takes their time with it and hits the integration out of the park from day one. Don't Forget Ford was savaged for its early Head unit enhancements......

If you don't want to risk things not playing nice together, you do not want apple. apple intentionally goes out of their way to not be compatible with the rest of the world, and it shows, daily. If you can make everything you use in your life apple, it will work with itself. Otherwise...good luck.

My whole family has been apple forever, they finally convinced me to switch with my last phone...stupid decision I should have known better.

The number of things android can do that apple can't...and apple people don't even know these options exist...it's mind blowing.

And the cameras suck *** compared to Samsung.

Hell you can't even use a USB (U stand for Universal) cord to charge an iphone...still...in 2023. lol. Gotta keep a super special short bus cord just for the iphone that is, as with virtually everything else, objectively inferior performance.

Android guys...don't make the switch. Everything is lame and restricted. Can't even put your app icons where you want on your home screen lol if you remove one they all move to fill in can't keep them where you want. Everything big to small is just "sorry, can't do that with apple"

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. Apple's communistic approach to business has always been a turn off for me. It's a shame, because they make a darn good product. If someone would figure out how to load Android on an iPhone, I would totally buy one. The only time I've ever had any serious compatibility issues is when trying to work with an Apple product with something non Apple; be it Android or Windows. I really don't want tho hijack this thread to turn it into an Apple vs Android discussion, so I will digress. And yes, not all Apple users think that Android is a phone. That was not meant to be a blanket statement to cover all Apple users.

I will say this: I don't plan on trading my truck in any time soon. An Andros OS would be a big incentive for me to do so. When the Android OS comes out, if Infotainment figures out a way to replace Sync with the Android interface on my model year truck, they will be taking my money. Lol

It's Android Automotive, not Android Auto. It's what's in the 2023 GMC Sierra.
