Default # setting on brake controller

What gain is everyone setting their brake controllers to? I know it depends on the trailer but I've been adjusting mine (I'm at 5 currently) and only notice it working during panic stops or harder than normal stops. Even during these times there is an aprrox. 2 second delay before I feel the trailer brakes activate. On my 2013 Ram I couldn't set that brake controller any higher than 2.5 or it would lock up the brakes on panic stops. I can smell my truck brakes burning up on mountain declines while towing my side by sides. I have a 22ft trailer if that factors in to this.

Check the manual for the correct procedure to set the gain. Short version: it should be set just below locking up the brakes when you fully squeeze the manual lever under the gain setting all the way, when driving slowly on a safe test road area.

Start by checking the condition of the trailer brakes and electric actuators.
If good, go to a large parking area and activate the trailer brakes only manually with various max settings until you find the setting that slows you just right.

Ok, I did do the normal setup of traveling approx. 20mph while adjusting the gain manually and squeezing the levers until it starts slowing my truck down and that's where I got the setting of 5. I guess I will have to get my trailer in the shop and have the brakes checked. The delay in the trailer brakes on hard and panic stops is what is worrying me.

I changed the Trailer Brake Effort (rate) to medium and that helped for my application.
Here's Ford video on all the trailer settings.

Thanks for the video, I never knew about that adjustment, I'll try that today.
