Default recirc air

My 2021 Lariat is having recirc issues. I press the button to engage recirculated air on the center dash climate control panel. Whether it's on A/C or Auto or completely off, recirc will stay on for a bit, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes 1 minute and then disengage and turn off, reverting to bringing air in from the outside. I often am behind noxious diesels and other unpleasant aromas and smog and want to only recirculate the air currently in the cabin. Especially upon initial heat up (winter) or cool down (summer).

Anyone else having this or a similar issue?

This is by (Ford) design and well documented Joe.

Google “anti-fogging strategy” if you want to know more.

The good thing is, it can be disabled via Forscan. Details and discussion here.

Another option is to install a HEPA-equivalent filter. It reduces airflow by a small but noticeable amount (perhaps the equivalent of one fan speed slower), but also removes a lot of particulate, including ultrafines like diesel soot. It will not remove non-particulate pollution like sulfur dioxide or NOx emissions, but generally these will end up in the cabin regardless.

Currently $10.60 at RockAuto.

Thank you DuneRunr and Steel City 07. I will check out both links.

DuneRunr, your post in that thread indicated it was one of the first things you disable. How? This Ford seems to want to control A LOT of things that I would prefer to control myself, including fresh vs recirc air, fan speed, auto high beams, auto headlights, DRL's, cabin lighting, approach lighting, etc.

I don't want my truck to do my thinking and making my choices for me. Annoying AF.

Steel City 07, I like the Bosch air cabin filter idea, but I like the coverage of the multi-layer (as shown in the chart on the link you shared), but I can't find the right filter to purchase. Any suggestions on part number?

You disable it with Forscan Joe, the details are right in that link. If you’re not familiar with Forscan, I would encourage you to look into it. It’s much easier than it seems. Otherwise, I’m sure if you ask around you can find someone local that is familiar with it to help you out.

The other reason to get familiar with it is for all those other reasons you just mentioned. Many of those problems can also be fixed or modified to your liking.

Many of the other things you listed can also be turned off with regular settings as well. Like auto high beams. Just turn that off in the settings of the truck. Auto wipers, turn it off, etc.

I think that's just a generic chart RockAuto puts in the description. As far as I know Bosch does not make any activated carbon or "multi layer" filters. There might be some other brands that carry them, but I have no experience with them.

RockAuto does list a Fram with charcoal, but it's probably just a generic filter otherwise. Certainly not a HEPA filter.

There are no "multi-layer" filters listed.

It absolutely works for me. Well, I haven’t tried it yet with my new digital **** module yet but it worked before for sure and I would expect the same on the new module.

I still got that weird occasional rush of air thing which isn’t a big deal, but the recirc mode definitely stayed where I put it after the change.

maybe its something i gotta go read again and try out. i got a lot of rural driving to do in the AM. between the road killed skunks, other rotting corpses, diesel this and that...oh and smithfood foods butchering everyones bacon, i absolutely hate not being able to have the outside air stay exactly that.
