I was in Walmart today with the intention of buying some oil for my first oil change - I'm currently at 4500 miles or so - but was astounded by several choices for the Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W 30. There was a "High Mileage" oil, as well as one that mentioned Dexos and sounds like it's intended for GM cars...?
Maybe it's all the same. Maybe it's not. Which one should I choose?

You don't want high milage anything in a new motor. It has conditioners and detergents you don't need or want. I like Pennzoil Platinum or Ultra Platinum synthetic and the price is relatively cheap. 8 quarts can run 40 bucks or less at Wally World or Amazon. Mobil 1, Motorcraft, Quaker State, Valvoline...take your pick but avoid anything "high Milage". They will all meet Fords requirements. Dexos can be used in other vehicles as long as it meets manufacturer specs.

I previously used Mobil1 but switched to Royal Purple after some issues. The RP 5w30 standard stuff is what I order from Amazon, not the high mileage. It's about $38/5qrts.
The RP is a bit more $, but I find its protection to be really good across all of my equipment. I use it in vehicles, mowers, small generators, power washers, etc in the appropriate viscosities for each application. I am sure there are a bunch of other good ones too, including M1. I would just get the standard stuff and not the high mileage. I don't remember the reason my mechanic buddy spoke of as to why to shy away from high mileage oils on non-high mileage engines.

WSS-M2C946-B1... I think you want a 5w30 oil with this on the label... so you have what you need for warranty purposes.. in the big scheme of things.. that is your most important constraint. and I have an earlier model.. so check you owners manual for sure.

Quaker State Ultimate Protection 5w30. Can't beat the quality for the price. Outstanding VOA's and outstanding UOA's. Found almost everywhere. Either way, if the oil you choose meets the specs required by the manufacturer, then that is all you need. Your engine won't know the difference. There is no "best" oil.
