There is surface rust, and there is that surface rust.

It's not pretty, but it's the underside of a pickup. Don't worry about it, it will be fine

My truck had surface rust but not as bad as yours. I cleaned it up and spray painted it with high temp rustoleum and still looks good as new almost a year later.

Do you expect anything less from Ford Motor Company? Let alone Chevy or Ram? Lol Corporate greed, charge more for a product and skimp out on basic items. For instance, bed lights were standard in 302a pkg now gone, can't even put a hood light on vehicles anymore. In about 10 years and XLT Sport will cost 70k and a platinum will be over 100k and we'll still get a sub par product.

appreciate all the responses and the opinions. I guess I just had a different expectation of what would be considered acceptable amounts of surface rust on such a new truck that has not been exposed to salt. Some of it looks pretty deep. Am I extremely worried about it - no, as I don\t plan on keeping the truck for too long. Just - disappointed... I've worked on numerous cars and owned more vehicles than I'd care to recall - but, I'll tell you right now that my 21yo "beater" 2000 lexus ES300 is still pretty much rust free - everywhere. Again, judging by the attitude in some of the responses, this seems to be tolerable and acceptable to most.

Non of that is deep, but it's very fresh, and has reacted in a way that suggests contaminates, that's not a reaction from fresh/plain water that was allowed to dry naturally - did they not spray down deicer?

How are you determining the depth of rust? All of that looks superficial at most with no depth and/or thickness to it at all.

I get that you are disappointed. I probably would be as well so I am with ya there but the truth is none of that will have a long term affect on the truck. I'm from the rust belt and you should see some of the stuff driving on the roads around here. Talk about RUST!

I get under the truck every fall and spray any suspect areas with Eastwood rust encapsulator. Brush off any loose debris and spray the encapsulator on like paint. 10 minutes of work to go from crusty orange to looking new.

I might need to check this out. Although I don't plan on keeping the truck for too long - I do like to take care of my things. Even if it’s “for the next guy” lol

This stuff is better, and will actually fight existing rust too.
