I'm wondering if you can lay the shifter down once in motion. If not, and it's in D, how silly does it look? Wife wants to know. She works 24/7 including when we're traveling

No, you can not lay the shifter down once it is moved from Park. The button will not respond and it would not be safe as you could not then change your shift position until the shifter comes back up (takes a few seconds).
