Default Different oil separator question

I decided to put an JLT oil separator on my 5.0 F150. After 5,000 miles it had about an once of oily gunk in the bottom. My question is without the separator where does this gunk go? If it goes into the intake to get burned - doesn't that actually cause more air pollution? Only my opinion - The reason Ford didn't put it on the vehicle is it's an additional maintenance item that if over looked would cause problems in the future if it was never emptied in a timely manner. Likely most on the forum maintain their trucks properly - but a lot of people are "gas and go" and if it wasn't for an oil change light that would never get done

the oil mist would be sucked in and burned... from a performance stand point, the oil lowers the octane rating of the fuel.

It certainly can't hurt as long as it's drained. I am also thinking of putting one.

Does that JLT have any media inside to separate the oil from the air? some cans have like steel wool inside them

Not a filter but a screen at the top to separate the oil in the vapor mist.
Also I'd thought about what happens if you did not service your JLT or etc. separator? I'd think it would simply revert to once again allowing oil into the intake.
