Difference between "Normal" and "Eco" Mode
Just today I switched to sport mode just to experiment with mpg. To my surprise...on a 120 mile drive my mpg consistently went up from 20.1 to 22.9 over the trip. My conclusion is that I was watching the turbo gauge...and the turbos kicked in WAY more in normal mode than they did in sport mode. I am assuming it's because the RPM's stay higher in sport mode and doesn't need near as much turbo boost when accelerating. This was starting from a full tank of gas. The first 40 miles was driving home from a neighboring town. This was all in normal mode. Today, I went back close to the same neighboring town and back...but 15 miles into this trip I switched to sport mode. So the terrain was pretty much the same for the whole 120 miles.
My truck doesn't have any turbos. But it does have cylinder deactivation. I think eco mode saves gas and works better with adaptive cruise, so I use it when highway commuting in heavy traffic. Most times I just start and drive in normal mode. Sometimes switch to sport for passing or on ramps.
I saw on a FB Powerboost group a comment by a Ford technician. He stated that Eco mode deactivates the second set of injectors(the ones that clean the backside of the valves off). He said in normal those injectors still activate when needed to clean the back of the valves. If this is the case I'll make sure I alternate between the two modes.
Yep. I get 1.5 mpg better mileage when I drive the wife's car (2014 Charger with 3.6 V6) than she gets. She is heavy on the gas from stops and doesn't watch traffic and traffic lights; I do.
