Collision avoidance while accelerating
I’m wondering why the collision avoidance system didn’t kick in when opposing traffic turned left in front of me. We were both stopped at a light and when it changed I accelerated when a car cut in front of me, making a left hand turn. Cruise control was on but not active (I manually braked for the light and it requires manual re-activation after I start moving again). Does the collision avoidance only work when cruise control is on and no manual acceleration pedal (gas pedal) is used?
As a matter of background, I was also turning in the same direction as the opposing traffic, attempting to take the outside lane. There were two lanes in the direction we both wanted to travel. I wanted one and the car wanted the other, our paths crisscrossing. My “A” post got in my way of seeing the car turning in front of me, not to mention I was looking to the right at the lane I wanted to take at the time. I popped the car in the right rear wheel housing, more towards the rear quarter panel, pushing in my bumper on the left corner enough to pop out the the plastic wrap-around grill piece above the bumper and dented my bumper in the process. Hardly noticeable. No air bag deployment. The bumper did not return to its original location, making it impossible to re-fasten the plastic grill piece properly on the left side. I took it to a body shop and had to point it out to the body man as it is barely noticeable. I’d like to pull the bumper slightly out to where it doesn’t interfere with the plastic grill piece fitting properly instead of removing the bumper because the removal of the bumper looks to be a bear with all that’s attached to it from behind. (The possibility of air bag deployment also concerns me.) But mainly the labor costs of fixing it are prohibitive.

Collision avoidance also works when the cruise control is off. It always does that to me when I back into my parking spot where there's a soft bush behind. I'm like, "I know, I know, it's okay..." then I have to back in slowly.
I believe collision avoidance goes off for a short period of time when a foot has already tapped the brakes.it lightly. If my foot is on the gas pedal, the system seems to be more vigilant.

It's not a perfect system for sure. Your situation have been outside its capabilities. Just like a car turning right will set it off when no danger. Thanks for posting this, it's good to know the limitations.

From the manual:
: The system does not detect vehicles that are driving in a different direction, cyclists or animals. Apply the brakes when necessary. Failure to follow this instruction could result in the loss of control of your vehicle, personal injury or death.
Also:
Intersection Assist (If Equipped) If your vehicle comes with a radar sensor included in adaptive cruise control, the pre-collision assist system may operate in a scenario where you are turning across an oncoming vehicle's path. Detection of vehicles driving in an oncoming direction is active if your vehicle is driving at speeds up to 19 mph (30 km/h).
Lastly:
In situations where the vehicle camera has limited detection capability, this may reduce system performance. These situations include but are not limited to direct or low sunlight, vehicles at night without tail lights, unconventional vehicle types, pedestrians with complex backgrounds, running pedestrians, partly obscured pedestrians, or pedestrians that the system cannot distinguish from a group. Failure to take care may result in the loss of control of your vehicle, serious personal injury or death.
