Default Clunk when slowing to stop in 4A

I’m getting a clunk when coming to a stop in 4A. It is both audible and can be felt. Feels like tranny but it only happens when in 4A. No clunk in 2wd so must be something in front driveline, axles, or transfer case. Has anyone experienced this? My truck has about 27k miles. I didn’t notice it previously but don’t typically drive in 4A. Now that it’s been snowing a lot I’m using 4A frequently and the issue is pretty consistent so should be able to replicate for dealer. I haven’t tried full 4x4 to see if it happens so will probably do that today. I don’t know how the 4a is engaged on these trucks but feels like there’s free play somewhere and it is evident when I come to a stop from moderate speed.

Hi there! Will you send us a message with your VIN and your local Ford dealer? I can look into things on my end.

I don't notice a consistent clunk like you describe exactly, but I have noticed that when in 4A the truck's NVH goes up quite a bit. Mostly feel it in the gas pedal and floor board. Others say theirs does the same thing and it's nothing to worry about.

The only 4x4 mode related clunk I've noticed in mine was when I was switching from 4A to 2H when making a 3-point turn in my driveway. Decided it's best to do switching 4x4 modes with the wheels pointed straight.

Do you have a 21 or a 22?

21s have IWEs still, 22s do not.

I have a '21 and keep 4A on all year, I can't say I have ever felt a clunk or heard anything. Minimal discernible difference between 4A or 2H typically which is part of why I always just leave it on.

My 2019 Lariat though also had 4A, and I noticed some add behavior from the front when coming to a stop only when in 4A, and the dealer found an issue with the vacuum IWE, but this gen should have electric IWEs so I don't imagine it would be the same.

If it's seem odd enough may just have to have the dealer check. Doesn't sound normal to me.

Doesn’t seem normal to me either. Definitely some play in something. I feel it when taking off from a stop as well. Got an appointment for Thursday.

I have a 21 and tbh don’t know how the IWE’s work. Are you saying this may have something to do with the issue?

if i am in 4A i get a noticeable hmm or noise as well from rear seat area
i thought the slippery mode made it louder, but its the same
I only noticed it , as the last month i have had a passenger with me almost daily, so radio is very low so i can hear her talk to me ( grand child)
when i am alone in truck..radio pretty much makes all the other noise go away

I dropped it off at the dealer last night and as is typically the case the advisor called me and said they couldn’t replicate the issue. Long story short I went in and took a drive with him and he was able to hear/feel the issue. Now am waiting to see what they come up with.

Did you ever find out the problem?
