Default Catch Can Needed

Hi all
I had a catch can on my 2017 2.7L and it did pick up about a tablespoon of oil every 5K miles. In the winter, it picked up a cup a month of other liquids/condensation.
I know the 18+ versions have direct and port fuel injection.
I still have the Tracy Lewis catch can from my 17. Is it worth keeping/installing?

This topic has been discussed at length in previous threads. Please search for those and read at your leisure. Both sides of the argument have their proponents for sure. Put me firmly in the ‘no, it does not’ camp.

Personal opinion, NO. The PVC system is complicated enough on turbocharged systems, adding more is potentially a problem. Have seen quite a few teardowns on Ecoboost without catch cans show no real PVC related problems.KM

Needed? NO
Will it hurt anything? Not if you make sure to dump it when needed.

The use is dependent on the engine's specific condition of passing oil and your attention to any issue.
On 2018 and later the cylinder bore is a Plasma spray-on lining not a steel liner like the 5L before.
Some 5L 2018 and later have oil passage issues due the the Plasma lining application >apparently< being out of spec procedure at time of application.
I had the oil passage issue on a 2018 pre-owned 5L.
Through research from technical sources (not forums like this) I saw the cause of the oil passage and decided to try a possible way to intervene from the outside.
What I did resulted in a complete stop to oil usage in my 5L after some time to allow my process to work.
Therefore no catch can is or considered necessary when oil use is under control to it's expected very low rate.
You need to judge if the engine passes oil as the decision to install one in the PCV system.
.
Oil passing back to the Throttle body can affect the Throttle Body operation from accumulation over time, that oil mist accumulating on the back side of the intake valves in addition to the gas deposits, and oil in combustion tends to reduce fuel Octane in the charge and can cause spark knock under higher loads.
The positions taken to use or not to use one therefore is dependent on what is happening with the engine and your attention to its maintenance.
If these aspect are ignored, you get what you get.
Good luck.

As others have mentioned, to each their own. However, I would not recommend using a catch can during the winter months if you live in a climate where temperatures regularly dip below 32°F.

Before adding one you may want to check with your dealer regarding warranty implications.
It's grounds to void it

No. I would consider it on a gen 1, but not a gen 2.

@Bluegrass nicely written, but OP is interested in 2.7 not 5.0
