Default 2021 Powerboost "emissions" check engine light problems

Wondering if anyone can give me some help on my problems with my my 2021 powerboost. I have been to my dealer 4 times over the "engine light" coming on. The Ford App says every time that there is a problem with "emission leakage and system". Yet, the dealership has been unable to find the actual problem. Every time I am sent home after some work (replaced filler neck after smoke test, re-seated fuel tank pressure sensor, replace fuel tank transducer) was done at the dealership, and the engine light cleared by the dealership, only to have it reappear weeks to months later. Currently, we are awaiting for a part that "Ford manufacturing" has on back order. How is this possible considering they are making this truck every day? I have only had the truck for 10 months and it has been at the dealership for almost two months. Am I stuck with a lemon? Anyone out there with the same problem, or advice? I really like the truck but the down time at the dealership is trying my patience.

Not sure if it’s the same issue, but my 2021 Powerboost threw a CEL coded as ‘malfunction indicator lamp - regulatory’. Dealer diagnosed it as a failed evaporative emission leak detection control module. Module was replaced, CEL cleared and the issue hasn’t presented itself again.

If the issue was present at all times, your CEL would come back on after 2 drive cycles, depending on how you use your truck this would normally happen in 1 or 2 days. You said your CEL comes back on after weeks or months which means the issue is very intermittent or your truck sits for weeks or months at a time without being driven.

Assuming the issue is just very intermittent, it likely isn't present when the dealership gets to work on your vehicle. When you have an EVAP leak, they smoke test the system to check for leaks, if it isn't leaking on the particular day they check it because it only leaks once a month, there's not much they can do aside from making educated guesses and replacing parts that literally just passed the smoke test.

I'm sure this is getting very frustrating, but EVAP leaks are very minor concerns so I wouldn't personally call your vehicle a lemon even though it might qualify for a lemon law buyback in your state. Chances are the issue will eventually present itself, or the dealer will eventually replace the right part while guessing. These systems aren't very complicated, and there honestly isn't much that can actually go wrong with them.

Thanks for your advice. It makes me worry a less. Having my truck sit at a dealership lot waiting to be fixed by a part that is "on back order" from Ford manufacturing, for over a month, is discouraging - and costly. Also, when I had my truck, it may have sat three or four days max before I drove it. I guess there is nothing I can do but hope and pray the dealership has found the proper fix this time.

Just one more question - Is there a modified or different emissions system on the 2022 Powerboost from the 2021's? Wondering if the emissions parts have changed in one year, to help me understand why there is such a problem with the parts. Or, does this system have any "microchip" needs? Many thanks for your wisdom..

Hey there! I can look into your F150's Powerboost concerns on my end. Will you send us a message with your VIN and dealership info?

I am told they will be trying to get me some information as well by Friday, April 29, 2022. My case number with Ford Customer Care is # CAS36517722. With all of my visits to the dealership and the communication from my dealership with Ford Man., you will no doubt see why I have reached a fairly strong level of frustration. My truck VIN is 1FTFW1ED4MFB81987, and my dealership is Carleton Place Ford in Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada.

Kind regards.
Thanks for getting back with me! Can you please send this info over as a private message so I can start looking into this for you?

Did a fix ever occur for you? My '21 has had the same issues intermittently for the entire life of the truck. Dealer now wants to hold it for a month as they have 0 ideas.

I had a 2021 powerboost and around 2k miles I started getting that same check engine light. Multiple visits later they couldn’t fix it and ultimately Ford bought the truck back after I contacted a lemon lawyer. I replaced it with a 2022 powerboost and now 7 months and 7k miles in I have the same check engine light come on. When I get back from my trip I’m taking her in and contacting Ford to see what can be done. If I run into the same issue as last time I’m done with Ford trucks, so frustrating. What was the end result on your truck?
