Default Cracked plastic inside strut assembly

I was rotating my tires the other day and noticed that the plastic cap or skirt inside the front strut/shock assembly is cracked. I have no idea how long it’s been cracked, or how it’s happened. To replace this part looks involved and expensive. How vital is it’s role? Thank you.
