My closed airbox kit came in today. I am not impressed. There are a number of things wrong right off that bat that maybe they expect you to modify or find a solution for, but for the money they are charging for this, it should be right and SHOULD COME WITH DIRECTIONS!!!

So for starters, while my box clearly has a place for a bracket to screw into predefined starter divots, no bracket or screws to attach to the box was included. Here is where it would attach:

Without this, the box is physically only held down by the two very lame push pin fasteners at the hood snout.

The box has what seems like a section that probably should have been cut out in the area of said non-existent bracket. In the condition its in, the box lid will not close due to clearance issues in this area. And I don't mean force it and it will go, I mean a good 1/4 inch from making proper contact with minimal pressure exerted. See below:

And WTF is the bottom cut out of the box??? Is there not enough air flow through the snout? What is the point of a this if its just got a big gaping hole in the bottom?

As mentioned by the OP, they KNOW I have a Stage 2 setup. My current CAI has ONE nipple on the tube. Yet this comes with two, with no provision to plug the unusable hole/nipple. C'mon Whipple!

And what is this damn O-ring for? Maybe if I had instructions, it would tell me what to do with this?

And yeah, as noted by the OP the diameter of those push clips don't even begin to make a tight fit. Throw them out they are useless.

So in summary:
  • No instructions
  • Lid does not fit
  • No side mounting bracket
  • Extra hole for nipple in tube with no provision to plug it
  • Worthless push anchors
  • Unknown oring
  • Big f'ing hole in the bottom of box
  • I didn't even try to close my hood, but it sure does seem to sit way higher than the snout I have now, I was too irritated to continue messing with it
And yes, I plan to send all this to the folks at Whipple to see what they have to say for themselves. I think for the money, I would much rather purchase a S&B or Airaid kit and try to modify to work with the whipple tube/ tube and filter. I think the end results would end up being much nicer and nicer looking.

I don't see a scenario where this is not getting sent back for a refund.

The oring looks like the large throttle body oring.

I would like to know if there is a bracket that is needed.

Whipple says the current stage 2 guys need to plug the 2nd port. Not sure how it needs to be done.

The O-ring is for the large throttle body.

I just finished installing that piece in my truck last night and it took me 30 minutes to find that O-ring. Don’t know why but they put the O-ring in the bag with the parts for the tube. I almost called them to tell them it was missing.

They talked me out of using the closed air box. And at least for now I’m glad I didn’t go with it. It does not seem quite ready for sale yet. I really don't want to have to pay that kind of money to be a guinea pig. Maybe in a few months they’ll get all the kinks worked out and i'll take another look at it.

Rayo, your experience seems to mirror mine. I think my lid went on though. My installer had a lot of complaints about things Whipple did, but the lid actually fitting was not one of them. Did they send you the hardware to actually secure the top of the lid to the airbox?

Any chance you can take pictures of the filter and measure it? I would love to spend some time cross referencing sizes to see if I can find an OE replacement.

Yes, I had little black machine screws to mount the lid to the box. Which is kind of nice that they have inserts in the plastic to accept machine screws vs. "tear up the plastic threads after a few in and outs"...screws.

For everyone else with this airbox, is a big hole cut out of the bottom of yours? Doesn't seem to defeat the purpose of a closed box?

Yup, mine has the hole too. It does seem a bit counter-intuitive to the benefits of a closed box with a snorkel.

I'm wondering if they decided the snorkel could not flow enough air for the high HP stage2+ guys?

While sure maybe heat is flowed a little different the the open top deal we have now, with that hole in the bottom... I really don't see how this is even remotely a "closed air box". If they can't flow enough seems like hogging a hole out of the bottom was a shortcut to figuring out a better way to solve the issue.

This box will lower your iats more then the open box not sealing to the hood.

if you guys remember I sealed the top of my open box with foam and lowered my iats close to 20 degrees. This was all with the front of the air box open just like it is on the closed air box.

Lowered your IAT's, or IAT2's? I've always been curious if a direct drop in IAT is equal to a direct drop in IAT2. My testing says no...of course there is a drop, but its not 1 to 1. However my tests were not scientific in any way shape or form.
