Curious what others are doing. Not sure about the Whipple but the radiator for the Roush kit sits right behind the inlet in the front bumper. Makes sense as it should get good air flow in that location. My bumper inlet is wide open so I'm worried about a rock possibly putting a hole in things. All of the aftermarket front bumper inserts that I have seen appear to me that I would no longer be able to mount a front license plate after installing the insert. Front plate is a requirement in WA.
Question: if I just install the front plate in that location it will provide protection against rocks but will it inhibit air flow over the radiator enough to negatively impact performance?
I moved the plate to increase airflow as the undersized Roush heat exchanger needs all the help it can get. I offset the plate to the side like the first generation ecoboost trucks, modifying the factory bracket.
I have had no issues with rocks, but grass, leaves, and bugs do collect in there and need frequent cleanings.
Picture of what I did.
If if you find the Roush heat exchanger lacking you can also add a second one to the system rather easily because the radiator area is completely unobstructed. I added one from an old Saleen Mustang kit, cost $150 total.
