Dual 2.5" should be good for somewhere around 500hp (flywheel), especially with an 'X' pipe. Single 3" starts to choke just north of about 320hp. Dual 3" shouldn't be 'necessary' under about 600hp.

Therein lies the issue....any Whipple 5.0 is gonna be well north of 600 crank. They're at or north of 600 at that tire depending on exact set-up.

Losing low-end torque is not an issue with the twin-screw, so aim big, right?

I'm seriously leaning towards the single 4" with some reworking done to the OEM Y.

I see Heartthrobe makes a 4" single. No clue how their muffler sounds though. I like the idea with the Flowmaster scavenger welded to the factory y pipe. Then there's no bottle neck issues. I think between the exhaust and scavenger it would be much more then $500. I'm gonna order it up and give it a go

Sorry I am just now seeing this. This seems like a can of worms to say the least, especially for a DD truck.

Procharger @ 10 psi here.

I just sort of jumped and threw on a Magnaflow 19054 like engineermike, which is essentially a 3" single (it deletes the 2.5" neck-down around the stock resonator).

Now after having it on a few days I am starting to second guess due to what I consider to be extreme droning on the highway. I am looking at other systems which dump at the back of the truck like Borla S-type, which is 3" in and 2.25" dual out - got me thinking what is "too small" for my setup.

Mike - do you have droning issues with your Magnaflow? My 4.10 gears make mine worse on the highway since I am at or above 2000 rpm cruising. It sounds good, just don't like the drone.

I wouldn't call it a drone. I consider a drone to be a resonance where it's louder at one specific rpm (typically cruise) than at other times. The 19054 is aggressive but I don't find it annoying or a drone.

Y’all will think I’m nuts but I call myself picky. I like/need flow but I HATE noise with a passion. I didn’t buy a Platinum to listen to a loud exhaust everywhere I go so I started experimenting...wound up taking the factory flange and cutting the oem piping completely out and replaced it with 3”. I used a 5x14 round Magnaflow in place of the resonator into a 5x8x24 oval Magnaflow for the main muffler. All good on the flow...miserable fail on the noise. All I could hear was exhaust on the highway. So...I added a 6x18 round Magnaflow to the pile of mufflers and now it’s perfect. Barely louder than stock if at all and full 3” from the Y back. All I hear on the highway now is tire noise. I mean it looks like a muffler catalog under there but whatever. lol

I kept going back and forth about making a 4" work. I have the Roush now and the rasp is horrible. As soon as tuning is available for the 2017 I'm tossing long tubes with x pipe and then figure out mufflers and resonators. It does sound like the Magnaflow sounds great with minimal rasp
