I got a 1985 F150 w/ 6cyl 300 and it almost runs while the starter is engaged. The smog pump has been removed and the small manifold that puts exhaist gasses into the intake has been sealled off. Is it not getting enough air into the intake? Got good spark and fuel flow. Changed the fuel filter, fuel pump and timing is good.
