What motor years can be used to replace 2009 f150 5.4l
Need input. What years of motor can be used to replace a 2009 f-150 5.4 l in a 2009 f150 5.4. If you use a 2004 can you take sensors from 2009 and use them on 2004 in your truck?

I believe any 5.4L 3v engine would direct swap 2004-2010 However I do know that there was a cylinder head redesign around mid 2007-08 but i dont believe it threw of any fitment issues with engine bay or sensors I also know at some point they switch to E-fans over the previous style.
I hope this helps maybe some other members with more specific knowledge will chime in good luck with your truck theres a lot of info and some great minds here.

I think the change was in the plug wells, 8/07. Same spark plugs, more clearance around the noses so they wouldn't stick so bad.

In mid 2008 the heads were redesigned to use a one piece standard plug. You do not want a motor that has heads that use the 2 piece plug. So late '08 to '10 you should be good.

Definitely get an engine with the later heads. You won't have any fitment issues with the sensors, but I would want to use the ones that match the generation of the truck, just to be safe. If you're looking for a used engine to drop in, get the newest one you possibly can. An older 5.4 with an unknown history could bring a lot of grief.

Not ! The head re-design was done on 5.4 3v built after 10/09/07 , this allowed the use of SP509 plugs that are one solid piece. It also has up-dated VTC solenoids and a few other things.

You should stick with a motor with a build date of 10/09/07 or later.. that will be a plug and play for you. Remember... 9/10 bolts to a 6 speed tranny, 08 4 speed.
