Default Unlocking Upper Latch on back door? HELP!

Hello guys...

I'm having the common problem of being unable to open one of my rear doors.

I've viewed all of the videos I can find on how to remedy this problem, but in my case, I believe the latch cable at the top of my door is bunged up (so pulling on the cable inside the door does nothing - since I'm pretty sure the end of the cable at the top is not releasing the latch due to being screwed up).

I can't remove the top latch assembly with the door closed to pull the assembly out and fix the end of the cable. (There are torque screws that are not assessable with the door closed.)

I've pulled on the cable from inside the door, as well as prying on the latch that goes over the u-shaped bar.

Can anyone tell me how to unlock the TOP latch short of using a sledge hammer?

Thanks for any help!
