Default Trouble shooting engine

2008 w/ 4.6 180,000 miles
drove truck about 50 miles turned off for around 40 minutes, it turned over fine but would not start. I tried 4 more times still nothing, I could hear the fuel pump spinning when I turned on the key, waited about 20 minutes truck fired right up, restarted 3 times, ran just fine, does this sound familiar to any one. Thanks

That could be any number of different things. That is low mileage/age ratio, has it been sitting for years? Have you worked on it or done any maintenance recently? Start by checking the simple things… Battery, air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, wires, connections, vacuum hoses, grounds, etc.

It's a daily driver, batteries about 4 months old, at 172,000 I replaced spark plugs and coil packs, air filter has about 10,000 miles on it.

Got it. Original post was 18,000 miles. Thought that was a bit low 😄

When you replaced the coils and plugs did you also replace the plug wires? How old is the fuel filter?

If you have a basic code reader to give you live data, you can check fuel pressure to see if that might be the culprit. If it runs fine after it starts, its probably an ignition problem and not Vacuum/air or fuel related…

start checking the basic stuff and then dig deeper if nothing presents itself.

Apparently I left out a zero😕, I did change out the wires, your suggestion about the fuel filter makes a lot of sense as I have not replaced that thank you so much!

Check your Fuel Pump Driver Module, they are a known problem since they corrode away. FPDM is located above the spare tire and mounted to the rear axle. Needs to be removed to check the aluminum cover facing the axle. Failed cover exposes circuity that can affect starting of engine.
