Timing set replacement preparation
Hello everyone. I'm getting ready to install timing components on my 5.4 3V. I am experienced in mechanical service and have done the job on a 2V 4.6. The one question I have is, do I need to remove ALL the cam followers and plugs to begin. I know the cam needs to be secured one way or the other and the #1 at TDC as well as the crank in the proper position with the off Coler links and cam phasers were they need to be also. But, the information I'm getting seems to be mixed on the question I have. The cam followers can only be popped out with the cam at the bottom of the eccentric of the lobe. But when the engine is rotated were it needs to be, when is this done? Obviously, I don't want to change cam position in relation to crank position by keeping the chains in place before this is done. Or it doesn't matter as long as the cam followers and plugs are removed BEFORE removing timing chains. Then the engine can be easily rotated without compression once all the marks are brought up to were they stay at #1 TDC for removal and replacement of the chains, guides, tensioner and phasers? Then, once the components are replaced, then the engine can be brought around to reinstall the cam followers under the low side of the lobes? Turning the engine as I put them back in? If I seem to understand the order of things good. If not, could someone clarify. All the videos I find start with all this having been done prior to the film beginning. I've done this job without disturbing the cam followers and only removing the plugs. Is this a nesessary step on the 3V only? What's up? I may be over thinking this and will be fine once I begin......
