Default Timing:How to

Hello I am a new owner of a 1987 F-150 with the straight 6
I am getting ready to do a tune up but I dont know how to set the timing on this engine.
I have a timing light and have only ever set timing on my 75 beetle
Please help

It's easy! loosen up the distributor and move the dizzy aka the CAP Clock or counter clockwize; and using your timing light you can start to move it around and see where you want it....

i kinda figured that part
let me be a bit more specific
where do i aim the timing light?
and the timing marks?
where are they at?
according to factory settings where do i line them up to?

The degree marks are on the crankshaft counter balance (front of engine) and the pointer is on the timing cover. Or there is an index mark on the balancer and the degree marks are on the cover. Sorry two different types of systems were used depending on year model. If you cannot see the mark within range of the strobe flash, you might need to disconnect the PIP connector (dangling near the distributor) again dependent of year model. Now that I have successfully confused myself along with you, hopefully a more clear description is on the way. Good luck!
