Starting problems
First, Hi! I'm coming here for hopefully some help on an issue I'm having with my F150. I had a 69 chevy c10 and ended up selling it as I couldn't keep up with the problems and bought an 1988 Ford F150 with a 4.9L straight six and five speed transmission. I loved it, up until the starter started to go. Anyways, I replaced the battery because that too was going and I could push start it, but not start it with the key. So, we replaced the starter and then I still couldn't start it with the key, so we we replaced the starter solenoid and the old one was so bad it smoked a brand new starter two days out of the box and I ended up replacing the starter again this afternoon and I still can't start the truck with the key however, I can start it with the key in the on position in the ignition and taking a screwdriver and touching both bolts on the solenoid. I have no idea what to do or how to get it fixed, so hopefully someone can help me.
Had the same problem with one of my work trucks. Turned out to be the ignition switch. Not the lock cylinder but the actual switch thats on the steering column under the dash. I just wired a push-button switch directly to the solenoid & mounted it on dash. Worked perfect.
Sorry garrettvbhc. I was out of town yesterday. All you need is a push button switch & 2 pieces of wire. On the back of switch there are 2 connections.(small screws). Run 1 wire to battery cable connection on solenoid. Run other wire small to small terminal on solenoid that has L shaped push-on wire terminal connected to it. If you have any problems pm me you e-mail and I`ll send you some pics.
I got mine at Napa. Any auto parts store should have it. Just ask for a push button starter switch. Will e-mail pics. You will also need some wire. I used 24 gauge. You can get where you get your switch.
