Default Spark plugs

Hello all!!! Just bought my FX4 SuperCrew with 137k on the 5.4, going to tackle the notorious spark plugs first. Don't know if they've been done but wanted opinions on DIY or have a shop/dealership change them. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but kind of unsure on this one. Any and all opinions welcome!!!!!

Hi and welcome!

What year?

Mid/late 2008 (after May, IIRC) had redesigned heads and take a 1-piece plug - MC SP-509. Otherwise you need the 2-piece MC SP-515's.

And - new boots, silicon dielectric, a Lisle 65600 tool (for older heads), a deepwell 9/16" plug socket (or OTC 6900), hi-temp nickel anti-seize ( for SP-515 ground sleeve), MC carb cleaner ( for SP-515 removal), and a copy of the latest removal TSB.

More info here: https://www.f150forum.com/f4/new-me-...9/#post3291654

good luck!

It's a 2005 model year (11/2004 manufacture date). From what I've read there is a one-piece made by Champion that can be used in place of the two-piece plug. I found the Lisle tool for $109. Any suggestions on things to do before removing the plugs, i.e. do it hot/cold, run Seafoam before hand, etc.

Hi.

Follow the TSB. There are links related to the removal procedures in that link I posted earlier.

TSB ==> http://www.f150online.com/forums/3146012-post8.html. (Ignore the Rotunda extractor removal instructions - refer to the Lisle instructions instead if you have any breakage.)

If you elect to use Champion 7989's there is a link for that too ( the fourwheeler.com one).

Do NOT use Seafoam. It's crap. Run a few tanks treated with Techron instead - although if they are predisposed to breakage due to being in there for more than TWICE the Ford-recommended 60K mile R&R interval, it may not matter what you do.

BTW - that last link in that list is a VERY important read - given you are in the affected demographic for faulty injectors.

good luck

Take your time and do what the TSB says. Don't do it with the engine hot and let it sit overnight soaking in the carb cleaner if you can to help with pulling them out without incident. You most likely are going to break 1, or several, so get the tool if you can. I bought it from a local Napa who happened to have one in stock. You can do it yourself but have the Lisle tool. If you are anywhere around me you can borrow mine.
