Default Shift selector problem on 2000 F150 4X4

Suddenly the shift selector will NOT go all the way to P. It turns out that "R" is now "P", "N" is now "R" "D" is now "N" and "D1" IS NOW "D". Seems obvious that something happened to the linkage, or that there is something that has shifted out of place.
Does this amount to an expensive repair? (like pulling the whole dash apart to get to the neutral start switch or something similar)? Thanks in advance for any help.

Do you mean that you can't shift to park or that the gear select display is inaccurate? If it's the latter, you can adjust it with your fingers. Feel for a thin wire to the display. you''ll see how to adjust it. If it's not going into park :check all shift linkage for wear or damage. Go from there.

I'm gonna have to say I think he means the display is off. My moms expedition does the same thing, a local repair shop said it would cost $400 for them to fix. My dodge had a little **** that you spin and it adjusts it to the correct setting. I haven't looked at hers tho. Sorry for just rattling on and not helping at all.

Yes, that's correct. I had all the gears, the xmissn fluid level was fine. Turned out that I needed what they termed the "display block" for $31.00 and total repair costs of 113.00.

Yeah, the selector indicator said I was in "reverse" when in fact I was in "park" and the indicator would NOT go all the way to the "P" marker. Also on the other end, it would not go all the way to "1" for the "drive".
see my reply above.

Really easy to fix. Under steering column/dashboard there is a small white plastic part that holds a small black thumb wheel and cable. If the white plastic part is NOT broken, you can adjust by turning thumb wheel. If white plastic part is broken it can not be adjusted and you will need to buy the whole assembly part.(I read a post where a guy made it work by using zip ties)

Part is called shift indicator assembly. About $35 at dealer comes with dial letters, cable, white plastic part, thumb wheel for adjustment. You can do this job in about 30-40 minutes, you will need to remove some dashboard parts, or you can have dealer do it for you for about $200. There is a video on youtube, search ford dash lights and shift indicator repair. This guy had to remove more parts because he was also replacing lights inside dashboard.

This is how I fixed my 01 supercrew. I did not want to mess with removing dashboard parts and cables. I just needed the white plastic part that holds thumb wheel. Went to junkyard, looked for f150s, vans, expeditions, rangers most of them have this part. Found 3, removed white plastic part, junk yard guy did not charge me, went home and installed it in about 5 minutes.
