Default Rust on bottom of tailgate

Just noticed the bottom of my 2014 F-150 FX4 tailgate has a probably 6” plate that is rusted. Not sure on what the part is so hoping for some clarity

, will post pictures. Is it a pivotal part of the tailgate? Need fixing? Please let me know!

Not really sure exactly what it does but looking at the pictures, it appears to be some kind of device to keep the tailgate centered upon closing. Just a guess of course.
Any rust needs attention before it gets out of hand. It looks to be a removable part.My advice would be to remove it and maybe sand blast it and repaint it

Thats funny John. I have the step in my gate and never noticed it. I have a BedRug and the gate piece is zippered to the main section so the gap between bed and gate is covered. Just looked and Sho-nuf, it’s there!

The older we get, the lower we “slam” out trucks! Easier on the hip joints!
