replaced distributor and i goofed. now im at a loss?
Hey guys,
so i decided it was time to replace the distributor cap and rotor and i messed up. i put the wires in the wrong places. i turned it over. it idled rough and popped a couple fuses. i realized my goof put the wires in correct order via firing order and replaced the fuses. that didnt work. so i decided to put all of the old parts back on and see what happened. no change still messed up. so i am a little lost with where to go next.
any ideas?

Well - looks like you goofed again, NOW everyone on here is at a loss. They must "***"u-&-me you have a Ford by virtue of your posting the question in this Forum (but that is not always a reliable indicator), and you provide no complete profile and no other posts or any other indication what engine we're dealing with other than it has a distributor.......... My crystal ball is busted.

Remove #1 spark plug. Have someone crank the engine slowly (a second at a time) while you have a finger or anything covering the spark plug hole. When the pressure blows your finger - stop. You should now have the front pulley timing mark really close to zero.
Zero it up by hand with a socket and bar on the front of the crankshaft.
Remove the distributor cap and note the direction the rotor is pointing.
Reinstall the distributor cap.
The rotor should be pointing at #1 spark plug wire. (first plug on passenger side.)
In a counter clockwise direction the rest of the wires should be;
1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.
1-2-3-4 are passenger side front to back
5-6-7-8 are drivers side front to back.
That should be it.
I do not know of a fuse that could blow due to an incorrect distributor cap replacement job. Seems very strange.

Thanks for your good natured response to my jab in post #2. @Jdinner 's response is absolutely correct, AAA+, concise and beautifully written - and it came in just an hour.
Only thing I can add - is the following humorous link!

Are the triangle and the gash in the dampener what I am looking at?

No. Take some sand paper (fine grit) and run it on that balancer. You should see some lines. Here's a couple links with pictures. They aren't exactly like yours, but close enough to get the general idea.

Very good pictures @ck.falcon. It looks like I see a short and longer "faint" line about a half inch above the timing pointer bracket. If you positioned it according to jdinner's instructions - you may be right there. Burnish the balancer in that area as @Manuellabour247 suggests and wipe a little chalk or white paint on the surface, maybe the timing marks will start to show up.
You're definitely sneaking up on it!
