Read Diff Maintenance and Questions
Hey ya'll, I wanted to get some thoughts and suggestions when it comes to maintenance of your rear deferential. I own a 1993 f150 4.9L 2wd and haven't owned it for more than 6 months now and it has seen some drastic improvements and one of the last things is the maintenance of the rear diff. Would it even be worth the effort of draining the fluids, flushing, and simply refilling? Or should I suck it up and drain the fluids, remove the housing and thoroughly clean everything, bolt it back up and refill? Has anyone here actually removed the housing and done such a cleaning and how exact do you have to be with the sealant and such when bolting back up? Any suggestions are appreciated, extra effort never hurt when it comes to taking care of your ride the right way.

I assume the diff is a standard 8.8" unit in good condition that runs quietly and has no lube leaks at the axles or pinion flange:Pull the diff cover and carefully inspect the condition of the lube and the floor of the diff case. If the case floor is clean and the lube looks good, then replace the diff cover (I use a new gasket and black silicon sealant) and refill with new lube, 75W140 full synthetic.
The likelyhood of significant contamination within the diff is minimal and, short of a major breakdown or submergence in water, no cleanout is required.
I appreciate the advice. You're correct about their being no issues such as noises or improper function. I've always been a maintenance freak with my vehicles and come to discover the gentlemen I purchased this from was not so much, just good at washing them haha. Thanks again,
Mike
