Default problemstarting and staying on

im on here for a friend. he's got a 2003-ish F250 (the one thats exactly like the f150 externally) with a 5.4l. he says he has problems starting like if the battery was bad. so he hooks a pair of jumper cables and the same thing happens. so he hooks up a second truck to his own and it starts but does so tiredly. i was thinking it could have been an issue with his starter but then it turns back off. so has nothing to do with the starter. altenator and battery would have been a good candidate for the pronle, except that they hooked up to trucks to his battery. can it be a computer problem?
