Piston damage
Yes, those are the heads that eject spark plugs. And you won't know if someone overtorqued a plug until it comes out, so be prepared (or buy the upgraded heads, or TimeSert those now).

No, those gouges in the pistons wouldn't cause any noise or other damage - I wouldn't waste the money or time replacing them; I'd just run the engine until it's time to throw a full reman in there. If you find ANY real damage, now is that time.

Just a couple thoughts here...the piston and cylinder head are both aluminum. If something was sucked into these cylinders the surfaces would most likely look like they'd been shotgun blasted. I don't see anything like that in your pictures. Since the gouges I see look like a one shot deal my first thought is these marks were made outside the engine, maybe during the last rebuild. But assuming something did come in thru the inlet valve and made a quick pass thru and out, there aren't many options since the air filter keeps debris entering from the outside. The only internal part I know of that might cause this would be a failed injector nozzle. This would also cause a knock since the fuel would no longer be atomized and cause an ignition delay.
Have you looked at the injectors?
