Oil Filter Mess Solved
When I got my first F150 (a 2013) with the 5.0 Coyote I was shocked to discover that the cool oil filter catch tray had 2 spouts and could send oil all over the place if you didn't know it. And I spent years cursing the Ford engineer who designed the thing. I asked mechanic friends for a solution and they all said the same thing: lots of rags. When I got my 2022 model this year I was hoping they fixed this mess. Nope.
Yesterday I had an inspiration. I got a Weber grill aluminum foil catch tray and found that it would fit under the oil filter. Also the driver's side corner of the tray was directly over the front spout. So I made a hole there and put it in place and removed the filter. The oil drained out the hole and down the spout as I hoped. Once the flow stopped I removed the Weber tray and the only oil in the filter catch tray was right at the spout. No mess!
I also added a Fumoto valve so the drain pan oil can be diverted from spilling on the cross member below and making another mess.
Maybe oil changes won't be so aggravating from now on.
