Oil?
Hello
New here.
I am on my 4th Ford Truck, 3 Rangers and now a new 2013 F-150 xlt fuel flex.
For the first time I am reading the 2013 owners manual and trying to do every thing just right, f-150 is a big investment. Under maintenance in the manual the only reference to oil that I see are page 325-326 "oil check- "adding oil". I do not see any reference to oil change. Looking for how often to change, amount of oil (5.0L v8 FFV engaging) and what type of oil to use.
I see some people are saying 2013 shipped with motor craft 5w20?
Some say it shipped with synthetic blend others say full synthetic.
Change at 3,000 miles, 5000, 10000, when the computer says to?
I'm interested in what Ford specifically recommends- Am I just not seeing it in the manual?
Thank you very much- good to have this forum

5W20 Synthetic Blend is what your truck came with and is recommended. I'll just say I change mine every 5,000 miles. The manual says to change it when the readout says time for a oil change or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. You are fixing to get a lot of talk on oil change intervals. LOL
Thanks Superloop
Found a chart on page 399- but to me the chart was still unclear as to what oil the truck actually shipped with. I called Ford direct, funny thing was Ford did not know- lol they referenced page 399 but said they were also unclear after looking at the chart if it was full or the synthetic blend- they recommended calling the dealer. Dealer said- "I think it is synthetic blend but i'm not 100%" - kind of amusing I guess

Greetings! I'm new too so I'll pass along that I've found that the search feature is super helpful as a new guy. Rnlcomp had a thread on this and the bottom line is no one really knows what it is shipped with. Considering that Ford doesn't use a special break in oil, I don't think the factory fill matters all that much.
As for taking care of your truck, they key isn't the oil/filter per se, but that you change it regularly and without fail.
Ford designed this for 10k oil changes. (Check your oil life monitor) so there is your high end . Past that it really is up to you. I usually use Mobil 1 with the stock filter at 6-7k miles to have it match up with a tire rotation since I have her on the lift for my vehicles....multiple makes.
Lots of reasons for my choice , but it's what I feel is best for me..... and I hate to get all Yoda on you but only you will know what is right for you. Excuse me, I meant to say, "Choices for yourself you must make....mmmmmmmmmmm".

First, welcome aboard!
Second, pics of your new truck are required before you make any other posts!!
Third, you DO NOT have to use a full synthetic or synthetic blend motor oil to maintain your warranty. As long as you use an oil that meets Fords WSS-M2C945-A specification (this is a 5w/20 specification which is the requirement for your F150), you will be following Ford's recommendation. If you do a Google search on the "WSS-M2C945" specification, you will come across many oil brands that meet that specification (you can also look on the back of the oil bottles for it as well). Oil brands that meet this specification are GOOD oils. If the oil was not good, it wouldn't have met all the requirements that it takes to earn Ford's WSS-M2C945 specification. Anyone that tells you differently, does not know what they're talking about (I'm not trying to offend anyone, be sarcastic or come across as a jerk, I'm just stating a fact)!!
If you do choose to use Motorcraft as your oil, it will be the Motorcraft Premium Synthetic Blend Motor Oil (Ford Part #XO-5W20-QSP). You can use their Full Synthetic motor oil but it's not necessary.
The one thing I find puzzling is why Motorcraft has to be a synthetic blend oil, at the minimum, to meet Ford's WSS-M2C945-A specification when most other brands are conventional oil. I have no idea but that's what it is if you do choose to use Motorcraft.
Fourth, Ford recommends changing the oil in your F150 to maintain your warranty when one of the following 3 things happen first:
1. When the " Oil-Life Monitor" indicates to do so (usually a light comes on that says, "Oil Change Required")
2. Once a year
3. Or, every 10,000 miles
Note: The above recommendation is what Ford recommends under NORMAL driving conditions to maintain your warranty. You, however, may change the oil whenever you feel it's necessary. Just don't go beyond what Ford recommends because if something happens, you make it easy for Ford to void your warranty.
