Malfunctioning Warning Buzzer
The warning buzzer on my 1998 F150 which is supposted to sound when the door is opened with the key left in the ignition is malfunctioning. It sounds EVERY TIME I open the door even when there is no key in the ignition. Is there an easy way that I can disconnect the buzzer and not upset the rest of the electrical systems?
Look in the doorjam and locate the switch that popps out when you open the door. fasten a piece of sheetmetal (thin enough that it doesn't affect the door working properly) over the switch with a couple self tapping screws.
easy, 10 minute fix. (my other fords had this problem too).
Tools needed: phillips screwdriver, glue optional
1) Remove the key lock cylinder by inserting key and turning to assy ON postion-then use the screwdriver to depress the ball detent (access hole on underside of steering column) and pull out lock cylinder. Next, remove the three screws holding the plastic cover (bottom of steering cover).
2) Remove the plastic housing(s)-top and bottom. You will see that there is a two wire, plastic keyed, copper terminal that is affixed to the top of the empty lock cylinder. This is the problem. Most get brittle and break the plastic tab that keeps the terminal from grounding out, or the assembly gets out of it's slot. I just put a spot of glue on the broke piece so it will stick to the inside of the cylinder the put the assembly back in place. It should set in place. You can now test fit the lock cylinder back in position and see that the chime will not come on if the door is open (unless the key is in the ignition). Make sure to remove the lock cylinder after testing. Put the plastic steering column cover back on, then insert the lock cylinder.
Takes all but 10 minutes.
Good luck.
