Default M5R2 rebuild or replace

The clutch and transmission in my 1990 f150, 2wd, 300 i6, went out. I am trying to find a replacement M5R2 that won’t break the bank (this is my weekend Home Depot/Garden Center truck) and can’t find one that is in my price range. I found an M5R2 from a 97. I know that the bolt patterns don’t line up. My question is rather than rebuilding my transmission is it possible to swap all the internal parts from the 97 transmission into my 90 transmission?

You know a manual trans from a 302-equipped truck will work, too, right? Same bellhousing bolt pattern.

The one from a ‘97 may work if it came from a 4.2 v6 truck, but I don’t know if the starter mount (pocket?) is in the same spot and what wiring harness differences there are from a year spread that far apart...
