Default Lifter tick

My 05 f150 has almost 225k on it. It sounds like the lifters are starting to tick. What can I do to quieten it down?

Question What's ticking?

You sure it's lifters? (or lash adjusters) and not something else. Use a high tech listening device (a two foot length of 5/8 heater hose) and listen to your injectors, exhaust manifold and then stick it into the Oil Filler tube. (Don't panic when you do the last one - it will sound like a GD freight train is in there!! )( !!!!). It might be phasers - and IMHO it likely is.

May not be a simple way to quiet it down if its phasers, but no real problem if she ain't running rough/badly or throwing codes. Check out https://www.f150forum.com/f12/5-4-3v-tick-299201/

I should have stated it is a 4.6L and not a 5.4. Didn't the 5.4 have more issues with phasers?

You're right. The "tick" such a commonplace thing in the 5.4 it caused me to assume you had a 5.4. However - I confess I always THOUGHT the 5.4 was just a 4.6 with a little bigger bore and stroke. Finding that I might need to educate myself a little more, I went to RockAuto and - guess what! I couldn't even find a "phaser" for a 2004 4.6!! They show a "Cam Sprocket - 42 teeth, instead. (Wonder if the 5.4 owners could just use them instead of paying more for lockouts??? Ha!) Clearly shows what I know!! Lol

But I still wish you the Best

As noted, I'd check the exhaust manifolds for any leaks, AND, I'd check each and every spark plug for tightness (loose plugs can sound like ticking - before they eventually destroy themselves, lol). While yer doing that may as well change them if they haven't been for ~60K. On a 2V, it's cake and the plugs are cheap.

Opportunism, eh.

BTW - yer 2V does not have phasers. The 4.6 3V's had them (2009-2010 ).

Lastly - if the above results in no joy, you may need to go deeper and change ALL the followers (you don't have classic lifters).

Ok thanks. Seems to be a little quieter lately. Guy at autozone told me to go with a heavier oil since i have high mileage on it
